California Enacts New Laws Regulating AI and Social Media for Youth

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed multiple bills aimed at regulating artificial intelligence and social media platforms, with a particular focus on protecting minors. The legislation includes Senate Bill 243, which requires AI companies to implement safeguards preventing chatbots from discussing suicide with users and mandates that AI systems regularly remind minors they are not interacting with humans. Additional measures prohibit AI systems from promoting sexually explicit content to minors, with these regulations set to take effect January 1.
