Soldiers Tackle Armed Shooter at Fort Stewart Army Base in Georgia

Six soldiers at Fort Stewart Army Base in Georgia are being recognized for their actions in tackling an armed individual who allegedly shot five fellow soldiers on Wednesday. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised the unarmed soldiers who confronted and subdued the shooter, stating their rapid response prevented potential fatalities. The incident occurred at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex, with law enforcement arriving shortly before 11 a.m. and the suspect being apprehended by 11:35 a.m.

Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, is accused of using a personal handgun in the shooting. According to Army records, Radford enlisted in January 2018 and worked as a supply sergeant with no deployment history. The injured soldiers are reportedly in stable condition and expected to recover, with three having undergone surgery. President Donald Trump commented on the incident, referring to the shooter as a "horrible person" in statements to reporters.

The shooting has raised questions about security protocols at military installations, which are designed to be among the nation's most secure facilities. Fort Stewart, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River by land area. The base houses thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and their family members. A lockdown lasting about an hour was implemented following the incident.

This event follows several other notable acts of violence at U.S. military installations over the past two decades. Previous incidents include the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people, a 2013 attack at Washington Navy Yard that left 12 dead, another Fort Hood shooting in 2014 resulting in three fatalities, and shootings at Naval Air Station Pensacola and Pearl Harbor Naval Station in 2019. The FBI is assisting with the investigation of the Fort Stewart incident, according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, also known as the "Spartan Brigade," was established in 2016 when the Army added over 200 vehicles to an infantry unit of approximately 4,200 soldiers. The Army has previously described this unit as its "most modern land fighting force." Authorities have not speculated on the motive behind the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
