Florida leads with 7 executions as capital punishment continues across multiple states

1.

Twenty-four individuals have been executed in the United States so far in 2025, with five more executions scheduled across four states before year's end. The current pace suggests 2025 may exceed the 25 executions carried out in 2024, which matched 2018's total as the highest since 2015. Nine states have conducted executions this year: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

2.

Florida has been particularly active in implementing capital punishment, with seven executions completed thus far, including Thomas Lee Gudinas on June 25. Mississippi is preparing to execute Richard Gerald Jordan, its longest-serving death row inmate at 78 years old, who has been on death row since January 1976. Mississippi's execution protocols allow for multiple methods including lethal injection, nitrogen gas, electrocution, or firing squad.

KEY POINTS

  • 24 executions in 2025 so far
  • Florida leads with 7 executions
  • Ohio postponed all 2025 executions
3.

Tennessee has scheduled two executions for later this year: Byron Black in August and Harold Nichols in December. Texas plans to execute Blaine Milam in September for a 2008 murder conviction. These scheduled executions reflect the continued implementation of capital punishment in these states despite ongoing debates about execution methods and protocols.

4.

In contrast, Ohio's Republican Governor Mike DeWine has postponed five executions that were scheduled for 2025, delaying them until 2028. The governor cited difficulties in securing lethal injection drugs due to pharmaceutical companies' unwillingness to supply them for executions. DeWine has indicated he does not anticipate any executions will take place during the remainder of his term, which concludes in 2026.
