Pelosi Responds to Trading Allegations During CNN Interview

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded to insider trading allegations during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper on Wednesday. When Tapper attempted to read President Donald Trump's comments accusing Pelosi of becoming wealthy through insider information in stock trading, Pelosi expressed frustration at the question. She stated she had agreed to discuss the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare, not respond to these allegations.

When pressed for a response, Pelosi called the accusations "ridiculous" and expressed support for legislation prohibiting members of Congress from trading stocks. She clarified that while her husband Paul makes investments, she personally is not involved in trading activities. Pelosi added that any investments made were not based on insider information and suggested that President Trump was "projecting" his own issues onto others.

The interview occurred on the same day that Senator Josh Hawley's legislation addressing congressional stock trading advanced in the Senate. The Honest Act, which would ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks while in office, passed through the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee with bipartisan support. The bill evolved from Hawley's earlier proposal known as the PELOSI Act, and the current version also prohibits the president and vice president from making trades while in office.

Pelosi has faced scrutiny over her family's trading activities in recent years. Reports have highlighted instances of her husband's stock transactions occurring close to congressional actions on related industries. One example cited was Paul Pelosi's trade of semiconductor stocks shortly before Congress voted on industry subsidies in 2022. The former Speaker concluded the interview by expressing pride in her family and redirecting the conversation back to the anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare programs.
