Judge Rules ICE License Plate Checks Led to Unlawful Detention

A federal judge has ruled that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers unlawfully detained a 24-year-old asylum seeker in Oregon after randomly checking license plates in the Beaverton area. The detention occurred when ICE officers ran license plates of vehicles, obtained owner information from state databases, and checked immigration status through Department of Homeland Security systems. The judge ordered the Tacoma Immigration Court to hold a bond hearing for the detained individual by Friday or release him.
