FDA Warns About Lead-Leaching Cookware Products

Federal agency identifies specific aluminum products posing health risks

1.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a public health alert regarding cookware products that may leach lead into food during cooking. The agency specifically identified a Kadai/Karahi Tiger White pure aluminum bowl as posing significant health risks based on recent testing results. The FDA has instructed consumers to dispose of these products rather than donate or continue using them.

2.

According to the FDA alert issued on August 13, 2025, retailers have been urged to remove these products from their shelves. The agency noted particular concern about imported cookware made from aluminum, brass, and specific aluminum alloys known as Hindalium/Hindolium or Indalium/Indolium. The FDA indicated it would expand its alert if testing identifies additional products that pose lead contamination risks.

KEY POINTS

  • FDA identifies lead-leaching cookware
  • Aluminum products pose highest risk
  • No safe level of lead exposure exists
3.

This recent warning follows a previous FDA letter to retailers in December 2024 that identified cookware from manufacturer Rashko Baba Co. Ltd. as containing unsafe lead levels. The agency emphasized that there is no safe level of lead exposure, with children under six, women of childbearing age, and breastfeeding women facing heightened risks. Lead exposure, even in small amounts over time, can accumulate in the bloodstream and lead to poisoning.

4.

Symptoms of lead poisoning vary by age group but can include irritability, learning difficulties, and developmental delays in children, while adults may experience high blood pressure, joint pain, and cognitive issues. The FDA recommends that individuals concerned about potential lead exposure contact healthcare providers for evaluation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also made additional resources available regarding lead in cookware.
