Bloomberg Endorses Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming New York City mayoral race, marking a rare political endorsement from the billionaire businessman. The announcement comes approximately two weeks before the June 24 Democratic primary election. Bloomberg stated that Cuomo's management experience and government knowledge distinguished him from other candidates in the field.

The endorsement arrives as Zohran Mamdani, currently polling in second place, attempts to close the gap with Cuomo before the primary. Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has proposed a 2% income tax increase on wealthy residents to fund free child care and public transportation initiatives. He has also advocated for a rent freeze for residents in regulated apartments throughout the city.

Bloomberg and Cuomo previously had what was described as a tense relationship during their overlapping tenures as mayor and governor respectively. This endorsement represents a significant departure from Bloomberg's typical approach to local politics since leaving office. According to Bloomberg's spokesperson, his only other mayoral endorsement since his term ended was for Mayor Adams after the 2021 primary had concluded.

Cuomo expressed appreciation for Bloomberg's support, specifically highlighting the former mayor's leadership following the September 11 attacks. Financial connections between the campaigns have emerged, with Bloomberg's daughter Emma contributing the maximum $2,100 to Cuomo's campaign. Additionally, Kevin Sheekey, who managed Bloomberg's 2020 presidential campaign, donated $500, while other Bloomberg associates have contributed to a super PAC supporting Cuomo's candidacy.
