Democratic Senators Express Regret Over Noem DHS Confirmation Vote

Seven Democratic senators voted to confirm Kristi Noem as Department of Homeland Security Secretary following President Trump's inauguration in January 2025. Five months later, several of these senators have expressed dissatisfaction with her performance, with some stating they would vote differently if given another opportunity. Senators Tim Kaine and Andy Kim explicitly stated they would now oppose her confirmation.

The senators' changing perspectives come amid the administration's immigration enforcement actions and following an incident involving Senator Alex Padilla, who was removed from a DHS news conference while attempting to ask Secretary Noem a question. The administration's deportation policies and approaches toward green card holders and international students have contributed to the shift in sentiment among these Democratic lawmakers.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, who voted for Noem's confirmation, cited Michigan's border interests as influencing her initial support but now criticizes Noem's policy control. Senator Gary Peters, ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, maintained that his position requires a working relationship with the Secretary despite disagreements. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen issued statements expressing concerns about Noem's leadership without directly addressing their confirmation votes.

Senator John Fetterman, who has occasionally broken with Democratic positions on immigration, did not comment on his confirmation vote when questioned. Senator Adam Schiff, who voted against Noem's confirmation, offered strong criticism of her performance as DHS Secretary. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the senators' statements.
