Ruling could create competitive district in traditionally Republican state
1.
A Utah district court has ordered the state legislature to redraw congressional district boundaries by September 24, ruling that the current map violates voter-approved standards against partisan gerrymandering. Judge Dianna Gibson determined that Republican lawmakers circumvented an independent redistricting commission established by voters in 2018, which was intended to prevent districts from deliberately favoring one political party. The legislature had transformed the commission into an advisory board in 2020 and subsequently ignored its proposed maps.
