Federal officials seek cooperation from California, New York, and Illinois

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally requested that California, New York, and Illinois cooperate with federal efforts to deport undocumented immigrants who have completed prison sentences. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin announced that letters were sent to the Democratic attorneys general of these three states last week. The federal agency is specifically asking for assistance in transferring individuals from state custody to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation proceedings.
