PBS and NPR Stations Adapt to Federal Funding Elimination

Public broadcasting stations across the United States are implementing various strategies to address the elimination of $1.1 billion in federal funding approved by Congress in July 2024. The funding cut, which affects approximately 330 PBS and 246 NPR stations nationwide, has prompted emergency fundraising drives, programming adjustments, and staff reductions as stations work to fill budget gaps ranging from 15-20% of their operating costs. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which previously distributed federal funds to local stations, has begun shutdown procedures following the Congressional action.
